Betrayal and Manipulation in the Accidental Billionaires Essay Example for Free
Betrayal and Manipulation in the Accidental Billionaires Essay In the Accidental Billionaires, the motif of manipulation and betrayal is prevalent. Mark Zuckerburg is the prime embodiment of manipulation and betrayal throughout the course of the work. Another character also attributed with such qualities is Sean Parker. Mark and Sean are similar in this aspect; manipulating their own world to achieve their goals. In the first few chapters of the book, the reader is introduced to the Winklevoss twins. The twins turn to Mark to aid them in their social networking idea, the HarvardConnection. After trusting Mark with their program, Mark begins to manipulate the idea into his own. In a very subtle way, Mark delays the twins in time to sire his own program. This action reveals to the reader that Mark is a lone wolf. Mark, told to us in the book, is not interested in money. For example, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦Microsoft had offered Mark between one and two million dollars to go to work for them-and amazingly, Mark had turned them downâ⬠(Mezrich 15). This action should be noted as the aspect of working alone seems to be, to Mark, the most efficient way to achieve fame. Mark is highly influenced by Bill Gates, a man who rose out of the very same school Mark attends and manipulated his way throughout his pursuits of Microsoft, and in Markââ¬â¢s point of view, individual. With his displeasing physique and social incompetence, it is easy to see why people underestimate Mark and are taken advantage of. Another character to note is Sean Parker. Sean Parker is a foil to the protagonist, Mark. Mark pairs up with Sean after he launches ââ¬Ëthefacebookââ¬â¢. Sean has a history of manipulating his way through major companies with the agenda of getting rich only, quite the opposite of Mark. Sean is extremely energetic, whereas Mark seems to be lazy as represented by his lack variety in his attire- flipflops, jeans, etc. Sean, however, was betrayed by those companies he used to work for, but, ironically, he pursues yet another company that betrays him in the end. Betrayal, through manipulation, is in the subtitle of the book, ââ¬Å"A tale of sex, money, genius, and betrayal. â⬠Betrayal is mentioned last in this climax because that is to show the most important motif and a symbol of the bookââ¬â¢s overall structure- It goes from Eduardo and Mark seeking attention to ââ¬Ëget laidââ¬â¢, then pursue money with genius innovation of modern social networking, and finally, Markââ¬â¢s betrayal is concluded when he removes Eduardo and Sean from his life because they threatened his brainchild, Facebook. The motif of betrayal is very subtle to the reader. Even after reading the subtitle that Mezrich so blatantly states before the beginning chapter, I was manipulated into completely forgetting about betrayal and instead was focused on the pursuit to fame. Even the title fools the reader in stating the plural form of billionaire, but only one billionaire is spawned at the conclusion of the book. Just as the twins, Eduardo, and Sean, Markââ¬â¢s real agenda was cloaked to me, until it finally dawned in the closing chapters.

Free Essays - Holden Caulfield Needs Logotherapy :: Catcher Rye Essays
Catcher in the Rye - Holden Caulfield Needs Logotherapy Throughout the book Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger, a boy who does not know his place in life, illustrates the human need for logotherapy. Viktor Frankl, a Holocaust survivor, wrote "Mans search for meaning", in which he describes his experiences and ways of resisting the efforts of dehumanization in the holocaust. In Viktor Frankl's writing he delineates Logotherapy, which are three principles of mankind. The main character in Catcher in the Rye is Holden Caulfield, he is an unstable young man, who wanders around New York for three days, without knowing where to go or what do. Holden Caulfield would benefit if he applied Logotherapy to his everyday life. The first principle of logotherapy states that's man has an inborn will to meaning, "We seek to live not only for ourselves, but to contribute something of worth to other people and to the world we live in."(370) Holden Caulfield rarely shows this trait, but he does reveal it seldomly to people he does not know for example when he says to a cab driver, "You know those ducks in that lagoon right near central park? That little lake? By any chance do you happen to know where they go, the ducks, when it gets all frozen over?âÃâ à ¦"(60) This exhibits that Holden cares for some things, which means he has a will to meaning somewhere inside of him, he just needs to find it, like one of his teachers says, "âÃâ à ¦but I can very clearly see you dying nobly, for some highly unworthy cause"(188) In this quote, Mr. Antolini is telling Holden that he believes he will do something worthy with his life, but it will not be something very useful. Man has free will acts as the second aspect of logotherapy. Viktor Frankl states, " Man's freedom is no freedom from conditions but rather freedom to take a stand on whatever conditions might confront him"(371) Holden Caulfield sometimes shows free will, "âÃâ à ¦I couldn't think of a room or a house or anything to describeâÃâ à ¦So what I did, I wrote about my brother Allies baseball mitt."(38) This shows he can think for himself and that he does not just do what people tell him to do. Critically analyse and evaluate current developments Essay
In the 1980ââ¬â¢s and 1990ââ¬â¢s the cruise industry saw the emergence of a new market, which was younger people with considerable income but no families. The term DINKYââ¬â¢s was given to these couples which meant ââ¬Å"Double Income No Kids Yetâ⬠These couples were excellent to target as they had plenty of disposable income and they do not have any children to worry about, being able to go on holiday, when they like and where they like, spending their quality time together and not having to worry about the price. In 1990ââ¬â¢s 15% of the passengers who cruised with P&O and Princess Cruises were from the UK and researches showed that there is still an active UK market. In 1998, the UK cruise market was expanding dramatically. Companies which had operated in the traditional holiday market were adding cruising to their portfolio and greatly increased their supply of cruise holidays for the UK market. Although cruising is loved by many travellers, there is still a staggering 98% of the population who have not taken a cruise, reasons identified by Dickinson and Vladimir (1997) cited in Cartwright and Baird (1999) revealed five main reasons why people do not cruise which consist it being too expensive, the exclusivity, family commitments, claustrophobia and sea sickness. Disabled consumers The disabled consumer group have become more interested in the cruising industry, many cruise liners did not offer ships which catered to disabled people. Now with the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, where all places who offer service have to make ââ¬Å"reasonable adjustmentsâ⬠the cruise liners had no choice but to build disability-friendly rooms for their travelling disabled passengers. Not saying that they did not have these rooms before, but some cruise liners did not offer this service for the disabled consumer group, and it was against the law. There should be no problems for disabled people finding a cruise liner suitable for them as all cruise liners now offer fully disabled facilities within the ships to cater to the disabled consumer group. Family Cruising In the 1990ââ¬â¢s a major development which was companies targeting families with children was put in place, by providing facilities not only for the adults but also for the children to enjoy, now in 2005, almost every cruise line offers family cruises. If a cruise liner does not offer a family cruise they are missing out on making lots of money. Although there are still some cruises which specifically do not allow children, reason being because these cruises are for the older / retired people who do not wish for screaming, noisy, crying children and babies when they are trying to relax. Being a kid is all about having fun. Coincidentally, so is vacation. But kids and parents rarely agree on what is fun. To parents, fancy dinners, late night shows and reading by the pool are fun. Kids have more fun playing games, doing scavenger hunts, and going down waterslides. The good news is that all of these activities occur on a cruise, making a cruise the vacation of choice for todayââ¬â¢s families. Under the supervision of the youth staff, kids can play video games, eat pizza and play in a ball pit, while parents relax and have a fabulous five course meal. It is a parentââ¬â¢s and kidââ¬â¢s dream come true! (familycruise. com [online] 2005) The quote above was taken from www. familycruise. com an internet site which specifically caters for family cruises. Helping families to plan holidays which will keep both parents and kidââ¬â¢s happy on their holiday. Parents love to go on cruises so they have to be able to find a ship which caters for the family, letting the children have a good time on the cruise and also for the parents to relax and not have to worry about looking after their kids and think about what they are doing and are able to do on-board. The cruise industry has continued to grow rapidly since the introduction of family cruises. This might be due to parents now being able to have their dream holiday, a cruise, and not have to worry about their children as they can go too and have fully trained sitters to look after their kids and keep them occupied all day long. Price Cheap prices are what the lower-end consumers are looking for. A good price with an average cruise holiday, they cannot expect more than that as they are not paying a high price for a luxury cruising holiday. Although the cruise industry is very expensive, there are still many consumers who like to go on cruises. This could be due to status, as only the wealthier people can afford to go on these high-class cruises. In 1999, it was possible to obtain a seven day cruise from the UK for i 399 per person, which then was cheap compared to the top end cruises which were around i 2000 per person. Now in 2005, cruises prices start from i 599+ per person. This is rather expensive as the average family spends around that price for a holiday a year, not per person. Cheaper cruising prices should be being introduced and this would be an excellent idea as many lower-end consumers want to experience a good cruise but unfortunately do not have the funds. If cruise liners offered cheaper cruises with good experiences not only the wealthy passengers can go but so can the lower-end customers. Incentives Cruises in America often have many deals which include, prices starting from $399, book before Jan and receive an extra nightââ¬â¢s stay, children under 16 cruise for free and many more. This is a good way to make more sales and allow people to pick their company to another one. As there are many incentives available which is what the consumers are looking for as they are paying a high price for their cruising holidays. ââ¬Å"Receive our special Early-Booking discount and free hotel stayâ⬠. (cruise. gr [online] 2005) The quote above is very popular within the cruise industry, this is the type of incentive the consumer wants to see to help motivate them to purchasing the holiday. Consumers today are very greedy and like value for money, if they are buying on the internet they will always look for sites which offer them incentives towards their holidays, or when buying in travel agent they will try to get some freebies towards their holidays.

Titanic Summary Titanic is a flawlessly crafted film that includes both a dramatic lavishing romance and the historical story of the sinking of the Titanic. It stars both the elegant star, Kate Winslet and the gorgeous Leonardo DiCaprio in a fictional romance that begins between a rich girl and a poor boy who meet on the voyage of the ââ¬Å"unsinkable shipâ⬠, Titanic. It is narrated by an old woman known as Rose who claims to be a survivor of the Titanic and tells her experience on the Titanic to a group of treasure hunters, who are in search of a rare diamond in the Titanics remains. She tells about her unexpected encounter with a young, unwealthy artist named Jack Dawson who she falls madly in love with. This causes much drama for Rose and her family though because she had an arranged marriage to a conceited man named Cal. Jack sees the true Rose hidden behind the upper class snob. The two fall madly in love and plan to stay happily together. They never imagined su ch a devastating misfortune to happen on this indestructible ship and how it would change their lives forever. Nothing on Earth Can Come Between Them â⬠Purpose of Movie Titanic was produce in 1997 by director James Cameron. The producer and directors purpose of this film was to bring the Titanic back to life. They wanted to recreate this ââ¬Å"Mother of all Shipwrecksâ⬠for viewers to get a taste of what it was like the be aboard this huge vessel from its beginning to its last few minutes afloat. This tragic film was meant to show viewers how life can be unpredictable. You can never tell what fate lies ahead. Relevance to Me Titanic is relevant to me in numerous ways. Just as the movie has a heart-breaking disaster, I too, in life, encounter misfortunate events that come my way. For instance, when my great grandfather passed, it was a very unexpected life changing event that took place in both my family and my life. I was on a student ambassador trip traveling through out Europe when I got an abrupt phone call from my mother explaining to me what had happened. It was not an occurrence that I could prepare for or predict to happen. If it were so, I would have not went to Europe, and would have been able to support my family and friends after this misfortune occurred. Titanic relates to my point of view because I assume most, or if not all passengers that were shown in this film, knew what fate lied before them, they would have never boarded the ship. Not only can I relate to this tragic film, but probably others, if not everyone, can find one unpredictable event that took place in there lives. Overall, I am a huge fan of this movie. My opinion is this inspiring film has strong acting, outstanding effects, and one of the most captivating, irresistible love and historical stories ever created into a film. It is known as one of the top movies of all time and one 11 Oscars in its days. This legendary movie is hard to resist! Donââ¬â¢t waste time! My Experience At High School - 862 Words
My mom and I were driving home from my club volleyball practice when I broke down in tears due to stress. High school class registration was coming up and I still had no idea whether or not I wanted to do band or volleyball in high school. Being a 14 year old in 8th grade, I never thought that I would have to make such a colossal decision that would affect my life forever. I only had 2 more days to decide how I would present myself in the new world of high school popularity, and I had no idea whether I would choose the life of athletics or musical talents. My first instinct wanted to have the best of both worlds. Maybe in the fall I could be part of the volleyball team and in the spring I could pick up band and be involved in both organizations. I would be able to play the sport I loved and get to know the volleyball girls and then in the spring reconnect with my band friends while playing hard music and getting to know the band program in that way. In my heart I knew this was not go ing to happen, there was no way that I could have both athletics and band in my schedule, nor could I truly be happy with this decision. I would miss out on the best part of band, the marching and athletic part, and spring for volleyball is the time when the team bonds the most because of the awful hell of off season. I just couldnââ¬â¢t pick this option, no matter how much I craved to have both volleyball and band in my life together. Understanding Of The Beverage Market in Relation to USC Student
Question: Discuss about the Understanding Of The Beverage Market. Answer: Introduction The given analysis has been conducted so as to enhance the overall understanding of the beverage market in relation to USC students. For enabling this task, survey was designed and responses were collected from the students with relation to the patterns related to the beverage demand consumption along with the manner price impacts both demand and loyalty. Instead of conducting the analysis on the population data, a random sample of 80 responses has been selected through the aid of Excel. It is noteworthy that the underlying sampling used for obtaining the sample was random. Analysis has been conducted on the sample data in congruence with a host of statistical tools and techniques to provide an insight into the student beverage preferences that are outlined in the section below. Data Analysis In accordance with the calculations that have been executed through excel, the conclusions highlighted below can be drawn. With regards to proportion of domestic and international students, it needs to be considered that 72 students out of 80 are domestic students and the rest are international students. As a result, domestic students sample proportion amount to 90% while the corresponding value for international students comes out as 10%. Based on the given data, it can be concluded that as there is an increase in the beverage price there would be a reduction in the consumption. This is reflective of the inverse relationship that the price of beverage and quantity consumed is exhibiting. The scatter plot indicated below further confirms the same. The above scatterplot confirms with the law of demand whereby price and quantity demanded are inversely related. Also, there seems to be high linearity in the relationship. According to the sample data, the most popular beverage belongs to the other category as most number of students in the selected sample i.e. 37 has voted for the same. Also, the least popular beverage amongst the students is energy drinks as it has the highest number of responses in the least popular beverage. The responses summary for the given sample is as outlined below. For evaluation of the beverage loyalty, it is required that the impact of price discount on the responses of the students need to be analysed. If by giving a price discount, a large proportion of the students would make the shift, then it would be indicative of low loyalty. Based on the computations using the sample data, it is apparent that when a price discount to the tune of 25% is offered, only 20% of the students make a shift to the second preferred drink. But, the increasing of discount to 40% results in the students shifting increasing to 56%. Thus, considering that more than 50% of the students made a shift with 40% price discount in their second preferred drink, hence students are not very loyal in terms of beverages. In order to highlight the difference in behaviour of international and domestic students, it would be worthwhile to compare the respective scatterplots between price and quantity consumed for both the groups. This is as illustrated below. Based on the above scatter plot, it is apparent that the demand for domestic students tends to have a higher negative correlation with price in comparison with international students. Thus, the quantity consumed of beverages is more impacted by price for domestic students in comparison with international students. The beverage preference summary pertaining to the domestic students is shown as follows. For the domestic students, the most popular beverage category is other which has been favoured by 34 students out of the total 72. Further, the beverage that is least popular for domestic students is energy drinks which has been voted by 30 students out of the total 72 in the sample selected. The beverage preference summary pertaining to the international students is shown as follows. For the international students, the most popular beverage category is Tea/coffe which has been favoured by 4 students out of the total 8. Further, the beverage that is least popular for domestic students is energy drinks which has been voted by 4 students out of the total 8 in the sample selected. Based on the sample obtained, the population estimate is enabled using inferential statistical technique. It may be said with a 95% confidence that student proportion in the population who would prefer soft drinks would be lying in the range of 7.18% and 22.82%. Summary In line with the data analysis conducted above, a host of observations can be made. The international students proportion is quite small and a dominant proportion comprises of domestic students. The price and consumed amount of beverage share an inverse relationship on expected lines. However, there is difference in nature of relationship between domestic and international students. Further, these differences between the international and domestic students are also observed in case of beverage preference. While for both student groups, the least popular beverage is energy drinks but the same cannot be said about the most popular drink. The most popular drink for domestic students belongs to the other category unlike international students who prefer tea/coffee. Loyalty amongst the students in relation to beverages is not very high as majority of the students (i.e. 50%) are willing to shift to a second preference drink when discount to the tune of 40% is offered on the same. Besides, it is also evident that soft drinks are not very popular amongst USC university students as is apparent from the confidence interval derived.
